Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977)
Sir Charles Spenser Chaplin was a musical star in the Dickensian working-class childhood in London before finding film success in 1914. He made his name as a director-cum-star in Hollywood in the Silent film era. His tramp persona – bowler hat, moustache, baggy trousers, outsize boots and funny walk – made him the most famous silent actor ever lived. He made skits for some time before venturing into feature film production. His most known films were The Kid, City Lights and The Gold Rush. Chaplin was hesitant to join the sound films, but that didn't erase his achievements in the film industry history.
